January 2026 News and Updates

February 10, 2026

As Emilien Rottiers, crop manager at Domaine de Graux, explains, frigid temperatures, less sunlight, and winter conditions bring challenges for farm management. But winter has its purpose. Snowpack that accumulates in distant elevations becomes a reservoir of reliable moisture for fields below and a source of surface and groundwater recharge as temperatures warm. Freeze-thaw cycles weather rock and help form soil. Cold temperatures regulate pest populations, disrupt disease and parasite cycles, and prevent the spread of invasive species. Orchard trees and many other plants require vernalization to break bud dormancy, bloom in spring, and produce fruit.

Winter’s harshness is essential for building adaptation and resilience, and for bearing fruit. In this deepest part of winter, we pause and celebrate the similar ways our portfolio and foundation partners meet challenging seasons, adapt, and together grow a more resilient food system.

The Nest at RFSI

The Nest team will be attending RFSI Europe, 4-5 March, at the Maison de la Poste in Brussels. Anouk Schoors and Hallie Fox will be hosting a breakout discussion on 4 March, “Lessons Learned While Building a Systems-Based Investment Portfolio.” Register for RFSI Europe with the code THENEST10 to receive 10 percent off registration.

RFSI hosted a webinar on 4 February, “How Investors Are Evaluating the Regenerative Agriculture Opportunity.” The Nest’s Hallie Fox was a featured panel member for the free event, which covered how investors evaluate regenerative strategies, including the trade-offs across risk, return, and long-term resilience. From the Farm

January’s Domaine de Graux blog post, noted above, features our farmer, Emilien. The post provides insight on how winter crops, cover crops, grazing and ecosystem thinking support long-term farm viability. Emilien shares his reflections on the importance of using the quiet of winter to refine skills, evaluate the farm’s economic model and prepare experiments for the next growing season. Those reflections can also be seen in a photo gallery shared by Domaine de Graux with images from 2025, and all the happenings at the farm.

Domaine de Graux recently sold 640 bunches of purslane to organic grocery stores this week through our recent collaboration with Biofresh Belgium. This strategy provides a mix of sales channels, local and regional, small and large, which supports the farm’s ability to thrive as an agro-ecological operation.

Food as Medicine Foundation launches new call for projects

Following a successful first call, the Food as Medicine Foundation is launching a new project call to support initiatives in Belgium that engage children aged 0–12 with healthy and sustainable food in an accessible, hands-on way.

Special attention is given to projects that take a systemic approach, involving multiple actors such as schools, local farmers, kitchens, associations, public authorities and other partners.

The aim is to support solutions that are sustainable, context-driven and scalable - going beyond financial support to foster knowledge sharing, collaboration and long-term impact.

The call will be published on 23/02 on the Food as Medicine Foundation website.
